Calcite vs Quartz Calcite and quartz are highly abundant minerals on the earth surface. Both are present in all three types of rocks named as sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks.
In these rocks, calcite is often the only mineral present, but in some sedimentary environments, calcite may be associated with dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, chert, or halite. In hydrothermal veins, quartz and other common vein minerals such as pyrite, dolomite, fluorite, galena, and chalcopyrite may occur with calcite.
Calcite can occur in translucent masses that mimic the appearance of quartz, but the two minerals are easily distinguished by their hardness and the fact that calcite reacts easily with dilute acids. Quartz is much harder than calcite and, unlike calcite, cannot be scratched by most metal implements.
